Description

Yup another Carina! This one has a funny story though: as I was capturing my Ha and Sii sub-frames for the upcoming Ara's Dragon 2x2 mosaic, I noticed that from my Bortle 9 skies I would need to push my mount to get at least 5 min subs if I wanted to actually get any data to show. And this is no easy task when you're imaging with an RC6.

At the end of the night, it worked relatively well, although a huge chunk of the sub-frames contained very funny-shaped stars and were discarded. Now HOLD UP A MINUTE! Stars are bright, aren't they? If I'm already combining three different narrowband channels to get my color image, why not combine some RGB stars and replace them in my narrowband channels instead? I'm pretty sure I saw someone doing this on Reddit or something.

And of course, I had to try it. Carina was the obvious choice, because it's still high in my Southern sky for a relatively good time, but I didn't even need to use that long: all I did was take a few minutes of 5's for each channel (R, G, B) and then re-visit my previously obtained HOO data. And I must say, this is a game changer for me. Not only the stars are way better shaped, but we get to see more stars now, and with so much more beautiful colors!

The downside? Now I can't take any more SHO proejcts without also capturing RGB stars. Whew.
